Ancona is a city and a seaport, situated on the Adriatic Sea in Marche. The town is finely situated on two hills that form an amphitheater around the harbor. It was settled in the 4th Century BC by Greek colonists from Syracuse. Later, the Romans exploited its sheltered anchorage and in 115 AD, under the Emperor Trajan, the present harbor walls were raised. The stately ceremonial marble arch standing forlornly at the end of the docks marks his achievement. The main attraction is the Cathedral of Ancona, dedicated to S. Ciriaco, which is a fine Romanesque building in grey stone, built in the form of a Greek cross, and other elements of Byzantine art.

Other sights include the Arch of Trajan, Lazzaretto, Episcopal Palace, Church of Santa Maria della Piazza, Palazzo del Comune, Church of San Francesco alle Scale, Church of Sant’Agostino, Palazzo Benincasa, Loggia dei Mercanti and the Pinacoteca Civica Francesco Podestri.

Ancona was successively attacked by the Goths, Lombards, and Saracens between the 3rd and 5th centuries, but recovered its strength and importance. It was one of the cities of the Pentapolis of the Roman Exarchate of Ravenna in the 7th and 8th centuries. In 840, Saracen raiders sacked and burned the city, after Charlemagne’s conquest of northern Italy, it became the capital of the Marca di Ancona, whence the name of the modern region. After 1000, Ancona became increasingly independent, eventually turning into an important maritime republic, together with Gaeta, Trani and Ragusa, Often clashing against the nearby power of Venice.

In the struggle between the Popes and the Holy Roman Emperor that troubled Italy from the 12th century onwards, Ancona sided with the Guelphs. Differently from other cities of northern Italy, Ancona never became a seignory.
